How To Keep Your Child Safe In An Unsafe World?
The world can be a scary place – as adults, we know this all to well. But when we’re children, we’re innocent. Perhaps, we may even be just a bit naive. When we find ourselves in a sticky situation, we’re reminded of just how unpredictable life can be and how the world around us can change in an instant.
Here at Life Skill Martial Arts, safety is always one of our main focuses throughout all of our training classes. Not only do we want to ensure that our students know how to defend themselves, but we also want to ensure that they know how to make the right decisions to ensure that they’re never even forced into that position to begin with.
So, exactly how can you make sure that your child has everything that they need to stay safe in an increasingly unsafe world? Take a look down below to learn more.
It Begins With Teaching Your Child All About Situational Awareness
Situational awareness is one of the most important traits that one can learn throughout their life. You may have heard this term in a different phrase, say, “street smarts.” And while situational awareness does have something to do with street smarts, it’s also about learning how to read social situations – this can occur in school, at home, or out with friends, not just in the streets.
Think about it – one of the first things that you teach your children is to look both ways before crossing the street. This might not exactly be the “street smarts” that you’re familiar with, but it’s a perfect example of situational awareness. Essentially, situational awareness is teaching your child how to become aware of the potential dangers around them.
How To Teach Situational Awareness At Home
Now, teaching your child to look both ways before crossing the street isn’t the only way to teach them how to become more situationally aware. In fact, you could even play the awareness game. All you have to do is help your child strengthen their observational skills.
For instance, when you and your child go grocery shopping, keep a headcount of the number of workers who were in the store throughout the duration of your shopping trip. Make a mental note about the color shirt that the cashier was wearing. Check how many entrances and exits there are in and out of the store.
When you get back into the car to head home, ask your child about these notes. If they’re able to give you a roundabout answer or an exact answer, then your child may actually have better situational awareness than you might have thought. If they look at you with a blank face, then it may be time to teach them how to become more observational.
Here at Life Skill Martial Arts, we’re intent on ensuring that the next generation of world-changing children have all of the skills that they need to achieve tremendous success in all that they do. Every step of the way, we want to keep our students safe.
