Whats “Want” Got To Do With It?
How often have we asked our children to do something and right away you hear something along the lines of, “I don’t want to” or “Do I have to?”.
At Life Skill, we are teaching students that to have Discipline means to obey the rules and Do What Is Right. They learn that there should be only two words that come out of our mouths when our moms or dads asked us to do something. Those two words are… you guessed it: “Yes, ma’am/sir.”
Our instructors give students a little bonus. We ask them to create that little cartoon smoke behind them because as soon as they say, “Yes, ma’am”, or “Yes, sir” they take off and they do what they are asked Immediately. In Life Skill classes, you’ll hear children define “Immediately” as right away.
By teaching kids good habits through structure, Life Skill classes help kids to develop self-discipline. As they start to develop good habits they are on the road to having a more successful life.
Here’s a challenge. Every time we ask our child to do something, keep an ear open for what is their response is. As soon as you start to hear anything along the lines of “I don’t want to”, you can stop the conversation. Ask them what Life Skill Instructors taught them about “Immediately”.
You may notice within a week or two of doing this, they will answer “Yes Ma’am/Sir” and start doing what you have asked them to do. Our goal is over time, you are not going to have to ask them to do it at all. They are going to just go ahead and do it on their own as they start to internalize good habits and develop that Life Skill: Self-Discipline.
Thank you ahead of time, for not giving up on your future Black Belt Leaders.
I know that they’ll really appreciate it later in life.
